で、もうすぐ開催される CES 関連のニュースをみていたら、参考になる記事があったのでクリップ。

Motorola on Thursday introduced a mobile media player that shows live television using the DVB-H standard.

The device, which will be showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week, is pocket-sized with a 4.3 inch video screen. Motorola's new DHO1 device is compatible with the DVB-H standard, however.

The DVB-H standard is backed by No. 1 cell phone maker Nokia and European regulators but not compatible with Qualcomm's Mobile TV standard, MediaFLO, backed by Verizon and AT&T in the United States. MediaFLO uses the 700 MHz frequency spectrum (716-722MHz), which was previously allocated to UHF TV Channel 55.

AT&T bought Aloha Partner's spectrum on Channel 54 and 59, this summer. Aloha Partners previously said they would use those channels for DVB-H, but AT&T has been non-committal about whether it will use the frequencies for mobile tv or 2-way voice. AT&T has committed to Qualcomm's MediaFLO for Cingular's mobile TV service.

Also up for auction this month is Channel 56 (Block "E"), which will also likely to be used for Mobile TV. If the buyer adopts MediaFLO on Channel 56, then the DVB-H standard would likely be effectively dead in the United States.

モバイルテレビじゃなくてデジタルテレビ全般についてだが、メジャーな技術規格だけでも、欧州系の DVB、米国系の ATSC、韓国・欧州系の DMB、日本系の ISDB/SBTVD-T、中国系の（仮称）CDMB-Tと、まったくの乱立状態。

ちなみに、ATSC、DVB-T、ISDB の比較については wiki の「地上デジタルテレビジョン放送」の項目にある。これをみると DVB-T と ISDB はかなり似ているのに対して、ATSC はずいぶん単純な仕組みにみえる。

あと、アメリカのモバイルテレビ規格については、wiki の ATSC の項に次のように記されている。

Mobile TV

Because the FCC forced broadcasters to use 8VSB modulation instead of COFDM, mobile reception of digital stations has (up till now) been difficult to impossible, especially when moving at vehicle speeds. To overcome this, there are now at least three standards which claim to improve mobile reception: Samsung's A-VSB, Harris and LG's MPH, and now the ATSC's own ATSC-M/H. This is in addition to other proprietary standards like MediaFLO, and worldwide open standards like DVB-H and DMB-T. Like DVB-H and ISDB 1seg, the proposed ATSC mobile standards are backward-compatible with existing tuners, despite being added to the standard well after the original standard was in wide use.

というわけで、MediaFLO と ATSC のモバイル対応はまったくの別物。で、もしかすると backward-compatible じゃないかもしれない。

しかし、放送局用の映像処理機材の世界シェアって松下電器産業とソニーなどの日系メーカーで７０～８０％じゃなかったっけ。そういうのを生かして日本発の技術である ISDB がもっとひろく採用されないのかな。どうせ、NHK あたりが中心になって研究開発したのだろうから、広くあまねく採用されれば、NHK の印象も良くなるだろうに。

こういう分野はばりばりの知財 related な分野なわけだから、知的財産の創造、保護及び活用に関する施策を集中的かつ計画的に推進する人達にもがんばってもらうとかないんですかね。
