先週のことですが、米 Sprint Nextel がモバイル WiMAX 技術を使ったワイヤレスブロードバンド基盤を構築すると発表しました。

ニューヨーク発--Sprint Nextelでは、WiMAX技術を使った第4世代ワイヤレスネットワークの構築に今後2年間で30億ドルを投じる計画だ。同社は米国時間8月8日、Intel、Motorola、サムスン電子と提携し、第4世代（4G）ワイヤレスネットワークの構築と、そこにアクセスするためのデバイスの開発を進めていくことを明らかにした。
Sprintの幹部らが当地で開催された記者説明会で明らかにしたところでは、同社は2007年、このネットワークに約10億ドルを投じるという。また、2008年にも15億～20億ドルを投資するという。4Gネットワークは、2007年第4四半期に稼働開始する予定だ。2008年末までには約 1億人が同ネットワークにアクセスできるようになると、同社は語っている。
出遅れているのは承知していますが、いつものように米国のニュースサイトやブログがどのように伝えているか、特に今回はこのニュースの周辺部分を、ざっと拾ってみることにします。

Satellite provider DirecTV may also offer its own brand of broadband wireless service -- by subleasing channels from Sprint or ClearWire.
確かに DirecTV と Clearwire がパートナーシップの話をしているという噂はあるようです。広大なアメリカで比較的点在している（であろう）DirecTV の顧客層と Clearwire や Sprint の顧客層がどれくらい重なりあうか／あわないか、が周波数の sublease だけですむかどうかの境界となるのでしょう。

次は Jupiter research の Joseph Laszio 氏のブログ。Sprint が WiMAX を「４Ｇ」と読んでることに違和感を覚えているようです。

I'm a little annoyed, though, by Sprint's attempt to brand all this "4G." I have never liked the "Gs," except maybe as a pure industry insider term of art. Even if the term was acceptable and agreed on, it's hard to see WiMAX being legitimately "4G." The WiMAX network isn't an evolution of existing mobile wireless voice infrastructure, as was the case with 2G-3G. It's something different, a parallel network that won't replace an EV-DO network as much as complement it, at least for the near term. So, 4G is probably at best a misnomer, at worst unnecessarily confusing.
モバイル WiMAX はこれまで携帯電話の発展の延長線上にないのだから、いかにも延長線上にあるように「４Ｇ」とつけるのは、控えめにいって誤記であり、もしかすると不必要に混乱させてるといってもいいのではないか、と。
たしかに初めて Sprint の Release を見たときには、4G と呼んでいるんだねえ、とちょっと目を引きました。まあでも、どのメディアも 4G と騒いでいないし、マーケティングメッセージだとみんな判ってるのだから、そっとしておいてあげてもいいんじゃないのという気もしますが……

While Sprint has been talking about WiMax for some period and though they did not mention voice, I am intrigued to see a major wireless carrier attempt to evolve their network in this direction.
Sprint はモバイル WiMAX については以前からその気を見せていながらも、音声サービスをするかどうかについては触れてないと。なるほど。「４Ｇ」と呼んだのは、あえてそうしたのかもしれませんね。

One hurdle, says Prudential Equity Group LLC analyst Inder Singh, is that the three primary vendors supporting the Sprint WiMax initiative -- Intel Motorola, and Samsung -- do not have solutions that are obviously complementary."All three of the major suppliers have slightly different implementations" of WiMax, says Singh. "So first they have to rationalize those three different players into one. Once that happens, they have to make the new system backwards compatible with the other existing parts of their network.
"It's an ambitious undertaking."
As for new acquisitions, most observers think Motorola is more likely to go that route than Intel, which tends to take substantial positions in technology providers rather than acquiring them outright.
One intriguing target could be Paris-based Sequans Communications , which has developed both fixed and mobile WiMax systems-on-a-chip and which raised $24 million in a July funding round. The three-year-old fabless semiconductor company claims to be the first to have received certification in fixed WiMax for both base station and subscriber station reference designs. Intel、Motorola、Samsung の 3 社のポジショニングは微妙なので 1 つになって Sprint WiMAX を支えるのは一筋縄ではいかないのでは、との指摘が。また、Motorola がフランスの WiMAX SoC ベンチャーである Sequans Communications を買収するのでは？とも憶測ぎみに指摘しています。

これで Sprint Nextel がモバイル WiMAX のインフラを作ることを決めたわけですから、今後はどういうサービスを提供するかに興味が移っていくことでしょう。
