R30 さんのブログで取り上げられたおかげで、先月の ET 研の Intel エントリを見に来る人が多いようで。
そういやあ、今朝読んだ San Jose Mercury には、熱波 - 停電だけじゃなくて、AMD の ATI 買収についての記事も載ってました。

この記事を読みながら、今回の AMD による ATI の買収についてつらつらと考えてみた（便乗エントリといわれればそれまでだけど……）。
で、いきなり本題と関係ない話だけれど、紙媒体の新聞には AMD と ATI の基礎情報がちゃんと載っている。さすがアメリカ、foolproof だ。

日本の新聞では、たとえば今話題になっている王子製紙と北越製紙の話でも、それぞれの基礎情報って説明しないんだろうなぁ、と読んでてふと思ったわけです。こういうフォローがあると全容が把握しやすいのですが、日本の新聞屋さんが持ってそうなよくわからないプライドみたいなのが邪魔するんだろうなと、根拠レスに推測してみたり。
さて、本題の記事はこんな感じ。
Advanced Micro Devices made a bold move Monday to buy Canadian graphics chip maker ATI Technologies for $5.4 billion, a deal that is likely to reshape the personal computer industry and seeks to make AMD more competitive against archrival Intel.The purchase, AMD's biggest acquisition yet and the second-largest merger ever in the semiconductor industry, is a risky move for Sunnyvale-based AMD as it tries to move beyond PC processors and offer a broader set of tightly linked technologies, much as Intel now does.
The deal also underscores how important graphics have become in computing. Sunnyvale-based AMD plans to offer graphics technology blended into the silicon of its PC processors.
ポイントは 2 つ。Intel 同様に製品の品揃えを増やすのは AMD にとってはリスキーな動きである、というのが一つ。もう一つは、今回の買収は、グラフィック関連技術が重要視されるようになってきていることを示していることなんじゃないか、と。
続いて、今回の ATI 買収により AMD の販売チャネルが広がることも指摘している。
AMD's deal, which could lower the cost of parts for PC makers, may ultimately filter down into lower prices for consumers and businesses buying PCs and laptop computers. The merger will also broaden AMD's product line to include graphics chips for cell phones, handheld devices and digital video applications.
要するに、non-PC 分野への販売チャネルの拡大と、PC 分野での低価格化を進めるというのが、今回の買収による AMD の戦略、ということでしょう、と。

The deal will also disrupt the $5.9 billion-a-year graphics chip market, where a new battle is likely to begin brewing between AMD and Intel. Until now, Nvidia of Santa Clara and ATI of Markham, Ontario, have been the two biggest competitors in graphics chips. The combination of AMD-based PCs with Nvidia graphics chips has been a favorite among PC gamers.
という感じで、Nvidia と関係した文脈での買収の良し悪しについての関係者コメントを載せています。まあ、一番気になるところだろうからいろいろ意見があるようですね、という感じ。
漠然とですが、今回の買収は PC 分野では Intel とがっつりと戦います宣言なので、むしろ non-PC な分野の方に「とばっちり」と呼んでいいような影響が出そうな気がします。
